The Athens Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History will present a panel of distinguished librarians in Georgia to recognize their profession’s contributions to African American life and history: Nike Shimobi-Obijuru, Library Manager of the Athens-Clarke County Library; Chelsee Dickson, Assistant Director of Academic Engagement and Instruction, Scholarly Publishing and Research at Kennesaw State University; Tamika Strong, Manager of the Reference and Research Division of the Auburn Avenue Research Library in Atlanta; Shona Foster, Instructional Technology and Digital Learning Director of the Northeast Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency; and P. Toby Graham, University Librarian and Associate Provost at the University of Georgia. This program will also discuss the history of the Dunbar Library–the first library for African Americans in Athens, which was established in 1942 during segregation.

This event is cosponsored with the Athens (Georgia) Regional Library System. It proudly celebrates the 150th birthday of ASALH’s national founder, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. The topic also serves to highlight ASALH’s 2025 educational theme: Labor.
