126th Anniversary of Lift Every Voice and Sing
Jacksonville, FL — The Friends of the Brentwood Public Library, an urban core branch, brought history to life as they commemorated the 126th anniversary of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” a powerful anthem that continues to inspire generations. Held in the heart of Jacksonville, the event was a meaningful celebration of culture, legacy, and community unity.
Founded by Sharon Coon, a dedicated member of the James Weldon Johnson ASALH, the Friends of the Brentwood Public Library, Inc., remains committed to enriching the community through literacy, education, and cultural engagement. This special Black History program reflected that mission—bringing residents together to honor a song deeply rooted in both local and national history.
The event featured guest speaker Hazel Gillis, President of the James Weldon Johnson ASALH Jacksonville Chapter, whose collaboration helped create a memorable and uplifting experience. Attendees were reminded of the enduring significance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black National Anthem, and its connection to Jacksonville’s own James Weldon Johnson.
Written by James Weldon Johnson and composed by his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, the song remains a timeless call for hope, resilience, and unity—values that resonate with the global community today.
