Through the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, we uplift stories of African American achievement, activism, and community, and are crafting a narrative that expands our view of history. We are reconstructing national identity, while inspiring a new generation of activists to advocate for America’s diverse historic places. Launched in partnership with national foundations and with support from the National Advisory Council, the Action Fund is providing direct investment in African American preservation projects, which are often undervalued and underfunded. In 2019, our new cohort of Action Fund grantees will change the landscape of the U.S. preservation movement and will showcase stories and places important to Black America and our nation.
In 2018, the Action Fund also awarded 16 grants, totaling more than $1 million. From Birmingham to the South Side of Chicago, to Los Angeles and Pittsburgh, these special places showcase the rich and complex story of African American struggle and achievement. The Action Fund is supporting and empowering grassroots and diverse communities to tell our nation’s full history. The Letter of Intent submission process is officially open for 2019 Action Fund grants. Letters of Intent are due on January 15, 2019, and awards will be made in July 2019.
