South Carolina educator and racial activist Dr. Bertha Maxwell-Roddey, passed away March 20.

Dr. Maxwell-Roddey was a teacher and eventually became one of the first Black women principals at a previously all-white school. She graduated from Oconee County Training School followed by Johnson C. Smith University, UNC Greensboro, and later Union Graduate School in Ohio.

She was founding director of UNCC’s Africana Studies Department and in 1974, co-founded the Afro-American Cultural and Service Center.
