On this recorded radio show at WERE 1490 in Cleveland, Ohio (360infoonenetwork) Lynn Hampton, Vice-President of the Rose Family Cleveland ASALH Branch and his co-host Vince Robinson interviewed Dr. Craig Woodson, President of the Rose Family Cleveland ASALH Branch. Dr. Woodson told his story of how he realized in 1984 that after years of studying African drumming and three years of musical research in Ghana that his family was among the first enslavers of Africans in Jamestown in 1619.

Through a friend in Los Angeles he was able to meet Dr. Edgar Woodson, the great nephew of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. After several years of being in touch their families had a Black White Woodson Reconciliation/Apology ceremony called ‘Sankofa.’ This meeting was also attended by members of Dr. Woodson’s colleagues at the Asante Cultural Society in Los Angeles who also spoke of regrets for participation in enslavement. Since that meeting in 1998, Edgar’s and Craig’s families have considered themselves one family and hope that others can follow a similar path. Craig went on to join ASALH in 2016 and has helped to bring African drumming to that organization, including performing with his colleague Baba David Coleman at opening of the Carter G. Woodson Home in 2017. Craig and Lynn have also worked together in Cleveland since 2011 at Lynn’s Juneteenth celebration of Dr. Carter G. Woodson.
