The main purpose of this position is to oversee all aspects of the museum’s research, interpretation, and presentation of African American heritage and practice. The incumbent will develop, alongside the Curator of Collections & Exhibitions, exhibition content and implement research projects and exhibition-related programs with a clear vision of the variety of needs for a diverse audience. The incumbent will also collaborate with colleagues, interns, volunteers, and community stakeholders to engage visitors in curatorial projects, services, and programs.

Exhibition & Exhibition-Related Program Development

  • Creates innovative and dynamic interpretive content for permanent and temporary exhibitions, traveling shows, virtual exhibitions, and off-site projects
  • Writes exhibition/gallery guides, catalogs, press releases and other promotional material, hand-outs, reports, and articles that interpret collection and loan items
  • Develops exhibition-related materials and exhibition-related public programs

Exhibition Outreach and Instruction

  • Acts as BDM liaison for exhibitors and donors
  • Provides interpretive strategies for docents
  • Seeks exhibition partnerships and cultivates donor/lender relationships

Teaming

  • Assists with conducting tours
  • Assists with planning and implementation of docent training
  • Assists with development of exhibition schedule
  • Leads exhibition team meetings

Volunteer Supervision

  • Supervises interns and volunteers
  • Performs other duties as assigned
