Fourth Annual 2026 Marie B. Allen Juneteenth Creative Arts Contest

June 19 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm EDT

In-Person Event | June 19, 2026 | 2:00 p.m EST

Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the effective ending of slavery in the United States.  On June 19, 1985, Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the Civil War.

Rooted in education and fostering a vibrant and safe environment for the community, the theme “What freedom looks like, yesterday, today, and tomorrow” marks a celebration of the emancipation of African Americans and asks students to think about what freedom means today and in the future.

We welcome MVI 7-12th grade student submissions on this year’s theme, which may include all forms of the arts, including essays, poetry, and visual art.  The prizes will include cash and other awards up to $250, and will be awarded in June.
