ASALH: Association for the Study of African American Life and History
Milton P. Webster (1887–1965) was a pioneering African American labor leader and civil rights advocate who played a crucial role in advancing the rights of Black workers in the United States. Beginning his career as a Pullman porter, Webster experienced firsthand the challenges of racial discrimination and poor working conditions that Black railroad workers faced. In 1925, he joined the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), the first Black-led labor union in the country, and quickly rose to become its first vice president. Webster was instrumental in organizing the union’s Chicago division and helped secure a historic collective bargaining agreement with the Pullman Company in 1935—the first national contract between a Black-led union and a major corporation.Beyond his work with the BSCP, Webster was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Fair Employment Practices Committee during World War II, where he fought to eliminate racial discrimination in defense industries and expand job opportunities for Black workers. He also served on the international board of the American Federation of Labor, helping to bridge gaps between Black workers and the broader labor movement. Webster’s leadership and activism were key in breaking down barriers in both labor and civil rights, leaving a lasting legacy as a champion for equality and justice.#ASALH #BlackFacts #AfricanAmericanAndLabor #MiltonPWebster ...
