Bio:

Dr. Felicia Bell is senior advisor for Dr. Anthea M. Hartig, the Elizabeth MacMillan Director at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Dr. Bell began this position on March 2, 2020. Previously, Dr. Bell was the Director of Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum located in downtown Montgomery, Alabama at the site where Mrs. Parks was arrested on December 1, 1955. In the academic setting, Dr. Bell was an Assistant Professor of History and the inaugural Director of Honors at Savannah State University (SSU) in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Bell began her career as the Director of Education and Outreach at the Coastal Heritage Society in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Bell has been recognized by the State Legislature of Alabama for her service as Director of the Museum. As well, in 2020, she was recognized by the Montgomery (AL) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Sorority, Incorporated as its “Citizen of the Year.”
While teaching at SSU, she received the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities Museum Internship Program Grant from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) to fund students pursuing internships at local museums and historic sites. In 2007, she provided expert witness testimony to Congress for the recognition of enslaved labor used to construct the U. S. Capitol and she participated in the National Capital Planning Committee’s Environmental Impact Statement related to the construction of the NMAAHC on the National Mall. Dr. Bell earned a B.A. in history at SSU, an M.A. in historic preservation at Savannah College of Art and Design, and a Ph.D. in U.S. history at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
