The National Park Service’s Historically Black Colleges & Universities Grant Program (HBCU) is now accepting competitive grant applications for FY2025. HBCU grants are funded by the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) and administered by the NPS. Grants fund a broad range of pre-preservation planning activities and physical preservation work for historic structures on HBCU campuses, which are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places or as a National Historic Landmark. Congress has appropriated $11 million for the HBCU Grant Program in FY2025.
Applications will be due July 28, 2026.
Eligibility Information
In 1988, the National Park Service established the HBCU preservation grant program to document, preserve, and stabilize structures on HBCU campuses. The HBCU grant program exists to repair historic sites on campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places or designated a National Historic Landmark, either individually or as contributing to a historic district. Projects not listed in the National Register must prepare or amend a nomination as part of the grant project.
Available Grant Funding
Grants are available for planning and “bricks and mortar” preservation/conservation work on historic sites, including buildings and structures. Eligible costs for preservation projects include: architectural services, historic structure reports, preservation plans, and physical preservation to structures. Grants will be awarded through a competitive process and do not require non-Federal funding match.
Any accredited Historically Black Colleges & Universities are eligible to apply for funding. For a list of eligible institutions, please visit the National Center for Education Statistics College Navigator database.
