This is Dr. Lottie Blake. Born in Virginia in 1876, she saw her grandmother treat people with folk medicine.

As a young woman, she joined the Seventh-day Adventist church and worked as a nurse. At age 26, she became the first Black member of the church to become a physician.

She practiced medicine in #Birmingham and treated orphans after an epidemic broke out in an orphanage in #Huntsville. She later started a nursing program there.

Dr. Blake and her husband then worked as missionaries in Panama, Haiti and Jamaica. When he died, her children went to live with her family who left the church due to newly imposed segregation policies.

Dr. Blake remained with the church, reunited with her children and continued to practice medicine. She retired in 1957 at age 81.

Dr. Blake died in 1976 in Alabama, where she lived with her daughter, at age 100.
