In our next #UndergroundRailroadMonth Black Facts, we highlight two brave freedom fighters: Laura Haviland and Jermaine Loguen.Laura Smith Haviland was a pioneering abolitionist, educator, and key figure in the Underground Railroad. Born in 1808, she dedicated her life to the fight against slavery, actively assisting fugitive slaves in their escape to freedom. As one of the founders of the Raisin Institute, a school that educated both Black and white children, she also provided a safe haven for those seeking refuge from slavery. Haviland's unwavering commitment to justice and equality made her a relentless advocate, and her bravery earned her a reputation as one of the most effective conductors on the Underground Railroad.Jermaine Wesley Loguen, an abolitionist and freedom fighter, played a significant role in the Underground Railroad. Born enslaved in Tennessee, Loguen escaped to freedom and eventually settled in Syracuse, New York, where he became a leader in the anti-slavery movement. Known as the "King of the Underground Railroad," he provided refuge and support to countless freedom seekers, helping them escape to Canada.
