Selma Burke, born on December 31, 1900, in Mooresville, North Carolina, was a pioneering African American sculptor and educator. Originally trained as a nurse, she shifted her focus to art, studying at Columbia University and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1940, Burke founded the Selma Burke Art School in New York City, fostering young talent. Her most renowned work, a bas-relief of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is believed to have inspired the image on the U.S. dime.Burke's contributions extended beyond her art to her teaching roles at institutions like Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges.
