ASALH Martha’s Vineyard Branch 7th Annual Black and White Fundraiser: Portraits of Leadership

ASALH Martha’s Vineyard branch presents our 7th annual Black and White Fundraiser at Farm Neck Golf Club, 1 Farm Neck Way, Oak Bluffs, MA, on August 2nd, 2023, at 9:00 am.

Please join us for an engaging program about Black Resistance featuring renowned leaders, writers, educators, and historians who will share their personal experiences about being the first in their chosen field, serving those who are less fortunate, recording and sharing stories about our people, and ensuring future generations know our history.

Our “Portraits of Leadership” program begins with award-winning journalist, author, and civil rights advocate, Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Kathleen McGhee-Anderson, award-winning writer of television, screen, and stage. Ms. Hunter-Gault and Ms. McGhee-Anderson will discuss the stories shared in Ms. Gault’s new book; ‘ My People: Five Decades of Writing About Black Lives.”

The ASALH MV branch proudly announces our first Black Resistance honorees, Dr. Robert (Bob) Tankard, a social advocate and popular TV host at MVTV, and Dr. Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, a renowned scholar, Harvard University Professor, and author. Ms. Shantavia Whylly, a 2023 Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduate, will receive our 2023 ASALH Student Historian recognition.

Our program begins at 9:00 am with a delicious breakfast buffet and will end at noon. Ms. Hunter-Gault’s book will be for sale at the venue.
