Phillis Wheatley, born in West Africa and enslaved in Boston, Massachusetts, rose to prominence as the first African American and one of the earliest women to publish a book of poetry in the United States. Her poetry not only showcased her mastery of the English language but also addressed themes of liberty, humanity, and Christian spirituality. In observance of DC Emancipation Day, ASALH will be closed on today, April 16th. We will resume regular business hours on April 17th, 2024.

DC Emancipation Day commemorates the anniversary of April 16, 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, which abolished slavery in the District of Columbia. This significant event marked a crucial step towards freedom for African Americans in the nation's capital, preceding the broader Emancipation Proclamation by nearly nine months.
