As the first African American woman elected international vice president of a major labor union, the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union, she broke barriers in a male-dominated field. Wyatt’s leadership not only advanced workers’ rights but also intersected with her tireless advocacy for racial and gender equality, making her a pivotal figure in the fight for justice and equity in the workplace and beyond. Starting this year off strong with our first #Afri Starting this year off strong with our first #AfricanAmericansandLabor Black Fact, featuring Asa Philip Randolph!! Asa Philip Randolph was a groundbreaking American labor unionist and civil rights activist. In 1925, he organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first successful African American-led labor union, championing the rights of Black workers in a segregated labor market. A prominent voice in both the early Civil Rights Movement and the Labor Movement, Randolph’s leadership extended beyond union organizing, as he advocated for racial equality, economic justice, and nonviolent protest. His work laid a foundation for future movements, influencing the fight for civil rights and fair labor practices nationwide.

ASALH: Association for the Study of African American Life and History
On January 10-11, 1957, sixty Black pastors and civil rights leaders from across the South, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., convened in Atlanta, Georgia, to strategize coordinated efforts against racial discrimination and segregation. This meeting marked a significant step in uniting advocates of justice and equality under the principles of nonviolence. Discussions focused on empowering African Americans to challenge systemic oppression through peaceful protests and grassroots organizing.
