Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Giving Tuesday will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

ASALH’s 2022 “Giving Tuesday Campaign” is dedicated to increasing student participation in our branches. We want to inspire, support, and develop the next generation of Black historians, social scientists, scholars, and educators. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to pay the 2023 national membership dues for five student members for each ASALH branch. Hopefully, we will also raise enough money to pay their local dues as well.

We are living in a time when states are in a frenzy to pass laws that prevent the teaching of our experience in America. We are in a time where we are being told that telling our history and lived experience brings such discomfort to school age children that it should be illegal to do so. We need to ensure that interested students have opportunities to participate in activities that accurately reflect our history and lived experience.

Student membership dues are $55.00. We hope to add at least 275 student members through this effort. Each branch would be allowed to develop their own criteria for selecting and awarding the membership dues to five students.

Our theme for this campaign is to request generous giving to ASALH to support our diligent efforts to preserve our past and share knowledge to shape our future.

Our community is strong and resilient. Let’s help it grow even stronger!

As America confronts its legacy of racism, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) affirms the resiliency of people of African descent. This has been demonstrated for generations through familial ties. We are committed to sharing stories about the representation, identity and diversity of the Black family as celebrated throughout our history. But we need your help.
