Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Today, we honor the Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Today, we honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous communities across the Americas, including trailblazers like Edmonia Lewis. As a sculptor of African American and Ojibwe heritage, she used her artistry to uplift Indigenous and Black identities, inspiring us to celebrate resilience and representation. Let’s reflect on the strength of Indigenous peoples and commit to supporting their voices in our society. _ On Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor the rich history, resilience, and enduring presence of Native Peoples across the Americas. This day provides an opportunity to unlearn the myths surrounding Columbus and recognize the profound impact of colonialism on Indigenous communities. For tens of thousands of years, Indigenous Peoples have thrived in the Western Hemisphere, cultivating diverse cultures and traditions. Despite the devastating effects of European colonization—enslavement, forced relocation, and loss of lands—Indigenous Peoples have persisted. Today, Indigenous communities continue to advocate for their rights, celebrate their cultures, and educate future generations. _ Edmonia Lewis, a talented sculptor of African American and Ojibwe descent, used her artistry to celebrate Indigenous and Black identities while advocating for the representation and recognition of the Black community in the 19th century. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #EdmoniaLewis #HonorNativeCultures #RepresentationMatters #ASALH

His most famous work, The Sugar Shack, which appeared on the cover of Marvin Gaye’s album I Want You and in the TV show Good Times, became iconic for its portrayal of a lively dance scene filled with joy and culture. Barnes’ ability to represent the physicality of the human body, influenced by his athletic background, and his deep connection to the Black community made his work a celebration of Black experiences and an important voice in American art.

Next in our #HispanicHeritageMonth Black Fact seri Next in our #HispanicHeritageMonth Black Fact series, we honor Clara Ledesma, a trailblazing Dominican painter whose vibrant work celebrated Afro-Latino culture and the African heritage of the Caribbean. _ Clara Ledesma (1924–1999) was a Dominican painter whose vibrant works played a crucial role in highlighting Afro-Latino culture and the African heritage within the Caribbean. Known for her surreal and imaginative style, she often portrayed themes of folklore, mysticism, and everyday life, reflecting the diverse cultural roots of the Dominican Republic. Ledesma's art brought attention to the African influence in Latin American identity, contributing to the broader narrative of Afro-Latino history and enriching the understanding of Black cultural expression in the Americas. #ASALH #claraledesma

Her legacy continues to inspire across cultures. _ Ruth de Souza was a pioneering Afro-Brazilian actress who broke barriers in Brazilian cinema, theater, and television, becoming one of the first Black actresses to gain national prominence. Born in 1921, she worked tirelessly to challenge racial stereotypes in the entertainment industry, portraying complex, dignified characters that defied the limited roles typically offered to Black actors. Her career, which spanned over 70 years, paved the way for future generations of Afro-Brazilian artists, and her legacy is celebrated as a crucial part of Black history in both Brazil and the broader Afro-Latino community. _ #ASALH #ruthdesouza #HispanicHeritageMonth #AfroLatinoHistory
