Henry Ossawa Tanner was a groundbreaking African American artist born on June 21, 1859, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Renowned for his profound contributions to Black history, Tanner was the first African American painter to gain international acclaim. His works, which often depicted religious themes and everyday African American life, challenged racial stereotypes and paved the way for future Black artists. Tanner's painting "The Banjo Lesson" remains an iconic piece, symbolizing the depth and humanity of African American culture. Growing up in Pittsburgh, Tanner's early exposure to art and the city's vibrant cultural scene significantly shaped his artistic vision, making him a pivotal figure in Pittsburgh's artistic heritage.

As a life member of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) and a founder of the renowned a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, Bernice's legacy is one of profound influence and inspiration. Her dedication to preserving African American history and culture, combined with her powerful musical talent, will continue to inspire and guide us. Charles "Teenie" Harris, who captured the powerful images of Selma Burke in our last post, gets his own Black Fact highlight this week! Charles "Teenie" Harris was a celebrated African American photographer whose work profoundly impacted Black history and Pittsburgh's cultural heritage. Working primarily for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the leading Black newspapers, Harris captured over 80,000 images that document the everyday lives, struggles, and triumphs of African Americans from the 1930s to the 1970s. His extensive archive provides an invaluable visual record of the Black experience in Pittsburgh, preserving moments of joy, resilience, and community. Harris's work not only highlights the vibrancy of Pittsburgh's Black community but also serves as a crucial historical resource, illustrating the broader narrative of African American life in the 20th century.

Selma Burke, born on December 31, 1900, in Mooresv

Selma Burke, born on December 31, 1900, in Mooresville, North Carolina, was a pioneering African American sculptor and educator. Originally trained as a nurse, she shifted her focus to art, studying at Columbia University and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1940, Burke founded the Selma Burke Art School in New York City, fostering young talent. Her most renowned work, a bas-relief of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is believed to have inspired the image on the U.S. dime.

Burke's contributions extended beyond her art to her teaching roles at institutions like Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges. Later in life, she moved to Pittsburgh, where she continued to influence the cultural scene. Photographs of Burke (second slide), taken by the renowned Charles “Teenie” Harris, capture her enduring impact. Harris, pivotal in Pittsburgh's history, documented African American life in the city, preserving its rich cultural heritage.

Kyle Holbrook is a prominent artist and muralist whose work has significantly contributed to Black history and the cultural landscape of Pittsburgh. Known for his vibrant, large-scale murals, Holbrook has dedicated his career to depicting the struggles and triumphs of African American communities, often highlighting themes of social justice and unity. One of his notable initiatives is the MLK Mural Experience, which has engaged thousands of young men and women in the Moving the Lives of Kids Community Mural process, where they learn about art, community engagement, and the importance of positive choices. Through this program, participants beautify their neighborhoods, form positive peer groups, and gain artistic and societal skills. Holbrook's upcoming work with the Paris Olympics marks a significant milestone, as he prepares to bring his unique artistic vision to an international stage, further cementing his role as a cultural ambassador and advocate for diversity in the arts.
