National Educational Association's H. Councill Trenholm Memorial Awards
Harper Councill Trenholm (1900-1963) received his A.B. from Morehouse in 1920 and his baccalaureate in philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1921. He was president of Alabama State College from 1925 to 1960. Trenholm served for 21 years as executive secretary of the American Teachers Association (ATA). One of the country’s most outstanding Black educators, he helped build ATA’s numbers and strength and worked for the merger of ATA and the National Education Association. Dr. Trenholm was a contemporary of Dr. Carter G. Woodson and served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Association.
