The Six Triple Eight, officially known as the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, was the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II. Established in 1945, they were tasked with sorting and delivering millions of pieces of mail that had been delayed due to the war, ensuring that letters and packages reached soldiers on the front lines. The battalion, which faced racial and gender discrimination, became an enduring symbol of resilience, breaking barriers for African American women in the military and contributing significantly to the war effort. Their successful completion of the mission, despite the many obstacles they faced, played a pivotal role in boosting morale among soldiers and exemplified the critical role of women of color in wartime labor.The contributions of the Six Triple Eight to the labor movement extend beyond their military service. This month, we proudly feature Carla Stalling Walter, a distinguished author, scholar, and advocate for the transformative power of dance.Carla’s most recent publication, Sacred Dance Meditations: 365 Globally Inspired Movement Practices Enhancing Awakening, Clarity and Connection, is an inspirational daily reader that taps into the healing powers of dance. Each entry offers a movement practice that promotes spiritual awakening, mental clarity, and deeper connection to oneself and the world.Carla’s passion for writing began at the age of 8, driven by her desire to help others through her stories. She has a rich academic background, having earned both a PhD and BA from the University of California and an MBA from California State University.In 2022, Carla served as the Martha Daniel Newell Visiting Scholar at Georgia College and State University. She’s held faculty positions and leadership roles across public and private institutions, from dean to chancellor. As a writer, Carla was a member of The Writer’s Clubs in California and the San Francisco Writer’s Grotto, where she also served as board chair.
