Selma Burke, born on December 31, 1900, in Mooresville, North Carolina, was a pioneering African American sculptor and educator. Originally trained as a nurse, she shifted her focus to art, studying at Columbia University and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1940, Burke founded the Selma Burke Art School in New York City, fostering young talent. Her most renowned work, a bas-relief of President Franklin D.
