Our national president, Dr. W. Marvin Dulaney, will moderate a session that addresses three aspects of “black health and wellness.” Financial advisor DeWayne Ellis of Washington, D.C. will discuss the importance of financial health and wellness for African Americans. Dr. Tom Ellison of Birmingham, Alabama will discuss his efforts to provide quality health care to the state’s African American communities by sponsoring health care programs that reach out to the state’s grassroots citizens. Dr. Chastity Bradford of Tuskegee University will discuss her efforts to replicate the university’s historic “Negro Health Week” that started in the early 20th century.

This is the Hale Infirmary in #Montgomery, circa 1919.

It was one of the state's earliest hospitals for Black people.

Founded in 1890, Hale Infirmary was largely the work of one man, the city's first Black physician, Dr. Cornelius Dorsette.

Dr. Dorsette came to Alabama in 1884 at the urging of his former classmate, Booker T. Washington.

Dr. Dorsette quickly earned the respect of Montgomery's white medical leaders and gained the trust of his Black patients by his willingness to drive into the countryside to provide care and deliver babies.

He married Sarah Hale soon after his arrival in Montgomery but his wife died after less than a year.

Her father was James Hale, the wealthiest Black man in Montgomery at that time, and Dorsette convinced him that the city needed an infirmary for Blacks. Hale donated land, and a white women's club helped Dorsette raise money for the building and its operation.

Hale Infirmary operated until 1958.
