Unveiled in 2014 after nearly two decades of dedicated effort, this monument honors Denmark Vesey, a freedman who played an important role in Charleston’s history.

This event reflects ASALH’s Black History 2025 theme, African Americans and Labor, celebrating the contributions of Black women in shaping Charleston’s history and business community.
