Bayard Rustin was a key strategist in the Civil Rights Movement and a staunch advocate for workers’ rights. As a labor organizer, he worked closely with A. Philip Randolph to advance economic justice for Black workers, playing a crucial role in the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters' fight for fair wages and union recognition. Rustin believed that the labor movement and the struggle for racial equality were deeply intertwined, advocating for policies that uplifted both Black and working-class communities. His expertise in nonviolent protest and coalition-building helped shape the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which not only called for civil rights but also demanded economic justice, including a higher minimum wage and employment protections.
