On September 9, 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhow

On September 9, 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957 into law, marking a pivotal moment in the fight for equality and justice in the United States. As the first civil rights legislation passed by Congress since Reconstruction, the Act aimed to protect the voting rights of African Americans. It empowered the federal government to take legal action against those who attempted to prevent others from exercising their right to vote. Although the Act had limitations, it set the stage for more comprehensive civil rights laws in the years to come, including the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This legislation was a crucial step in the ongoing struggle for civil rights, reflecting the growing momentum of the civil rights movement during the 1950s.

Today, we at ASALH proudly celebrate our Founder's Day! On September 9, 1915, our founder, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the "Father of Black History Month," established the Association for the Study of African American Life and History with a vision to ensure that the truth of African American history would be preserved and recognized.

For over 100 years, we've been dedicated to promoting, researching, and sharing the vital contributions of African Americans to our nation's story. Today, we continue Dr. Woodson's mission with renewed commitment and passion, amplifying the voices and stories that must be heard.

Call for volunteers! Are you a student or a beginner videographer? Do you want to be a part of Black History? Become an ASALH Conference Videographer!

ASALH is looking for a student or beginner videographer to volunteer with ASALH’s main videographer on Wednesday through Friday to film full events. On Saturday, the volunteer will become the main videographer for the plenary session and banquet.

Despite being blocked initially, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent federal troops to escort them. Even with protection, the students endured ongoing harassment. This pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement highlighted the fierce resistance to desegregation in the South.

Happy Labor Day! 🎉 Today, we pay tribute to the legacy of Black labor unions and leaders like A. Philip Randolph. Pictured here is the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first successful African American-led labor union, founded by Randolph in 1925. Randolph was a pivotal voice in the early Civil Rights and Labor Movements. Who knows? The 2025 theme may just be about labor! Please note, ASALH offices will be closed today.
