#ASALHFamily: Black families played an integral pa #ASALHFamily: Black families played an integral part in the fight for civil rights and education such as leaders like Barbara Rose Johns Powell.

At the age of 16, she coordinated a strike at her school in Prince Edward County, Virginia which became one of the five cases that led to the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision.

In 1951, the teen led the strike at her school after the county board of education refused to build a new high school for black students.

Activism ran in her family. Her uncle was Vernon Napoleon Johns, an outspoken minister of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church‌ in Montgomery, Alabama and civil rights activist. #ASALH #ASALHFestival
