On November 14, 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges made history by becoming the first Black student to integrate William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. Facing crowds of opposition, she courageously entered the school under the protection of four federal marshals, symbolizing a critical step in the fight for educational equality during the Civil Rights Movement. Her bravery not only captured national attention but also inspired Norman Rockwell’s 1964 painting “The Problem We All Live With”, which poignantly depicts the young girl walking to school amid signs of hate. Ruby Bridges’ actions continue to be a powerful testament to resilience and change in America’s history.

This Veterans Day, ASALH honors the legacy, sacrifice, and resilience of African American veterans who have proudly served our nation. In line with the 2018 ASALH theme, “African Americans in Times of War,” we commemorate the centennial of the end of the First World War, a pivotal moment that highlights the complex experiences of Black service members from the Revolutionary War to today’s conflicts. Their stories reveal a rich tapestry of valor and struggle, encompassing the fight for rights within the military and at home, the establishment of African American Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, and the cultural contributions of the Black press and civil rights organizations. As we reflect on their courage and dedication, we celebrate the profound impact these veterans have had on both military and civil rights history. Thank you for your service.
