Crushed to death in a malfunctioning garbage truck, their deaths underscored the dangerous and unjust working conditions faced by Black sanitation workers. Their passing became the catalyst for the historic 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike, where hundreds of workers demanded safer conditions, better pay, and union recognition. This movement gained national attention, drawing the support of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who traveled to Memphis to champion their cause. The strike highlighted the deep connection between labor rights and racial justice, forever linking the fight for economic dignity to the Civil Rights Movement.
