The Association for the Study of African American Life & History was founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the Father of #BlackHistoryMonth.
On this day, February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assa On this day, February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City while preparing to address his followers. Born Malcolm Little in 1925, he emerged as one of the most influential voices in the fight for Black liberation. After spending time in prison, where he educated himself and converted to Islam, he became a leading figure in the Nation of Islam, advocating for Black self-determination and empowerment. In 1964, he broke away from the organization, adopting a more global view of human rights and Pan-Africanism after his pilgrimage to Mecca. His evolving philosophy sought to unite people of African descent worldwide in the struggle against oppression. Though his life was tragically cut short at just 39 years old, his words, teachings, and revolutionary spirit continue to inspire generations in the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality.

Lee Saunders is a distinguished labor leader and a Lee Saunders is a distinguished labor leader and a steadfast advocate for public service workers' rights. As the first African American president of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), he has played a critical role in strengthening the labor movement and ensuring that working people have a voice in economic and political spheres. Under his leadership, AFSCME has continued to fight for fair wages, job security, collective bargaining rights, and social justice, particularly for Black and brown workers who have historically been marginalized in the workforce. Saunders has been a vocal opponent of policies that weaken unions, such as right-to-work laws, and has worked to mobilize union members in the fight against economic inequality. His dedication to protecting public sector employees, from sanitation workers to healthcare professionals, has reinforced the essential role of labor unions in advocating for better working conditions and benefits. Beyond his work within AFSCME, Saunders has also been a key figure in broader labor coalitions, partnering with civil rights organizations to address systemic injustices that impact working-class communities.
