Every year, ASALH curates the national Black Histo Every year, ASALH curates the national Black History Month theme, carrying forward the legacy of our founder, Dr. Carter G. Woodson—the Father of Black History. Yet today, we face growing efforts to diminish, distort, or even erase Black History Month. This #BlackHistoryMonth, ASALH proudly presents the 2025 theme: African Americans & Labor. From enslaved workers to union organizers, entrepreneurs to essential workers, Black labor has been the backbone of this nation. Join us on February 22nd for the 2025 BHM Luncheon as we honor the invaluable contributions of Black individuals across all fields of labor.

Maggie L. Walker was a pioneering African American Maggie L. Walker was a pioneering African American businesswoman, educator, and civil rights leader. She made history in 1903 as the first African American woman to charter a bank in the United States, the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, which provided financial services to the Black community in Richmond, Virginia. Walker was deeply committed to economic empowerment, advocating for Black entrepreneurship and financial independence. In addition to her work in banking, she was a leader in the fraternal organization, the Independent Order of St. Luke, and played a key role in advancing education and social services for African Americans. Walker’s legacy as a trailblazer in both business and civil rights continues to inspire generations of Black women and entrepreneurs.

Fannie Lou Hamer was a courageous civil rights leader and voting rights activist who became a powerful voice for racial equality in the 1960s. Born in Mississippi, Hamer dedicated her life to challenging systemic racism and empowering African Americans to exercise their right to vote. She co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in 1964 to challenge the all-white delegation at the Democratic National Convention, gaining national attention for her testimony about voter suppression and racial violence. Hamer’s activism extended to economic justice as she worked to combat poverty in the Black community through initiatives like the Freedom Farm Cooperative.
