The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) hosted another successful Featured Authors and Black History Luncheon, which drew in hundreds of attendees.Several distinguished leaders, including ASALH National President Karsonya (Kaye) Wise Whitehead, educator Mary Frances Berry, Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III, journalist and author A'Lelia Bundles, and publisher Frances Murphy Draper, helped to kick off the day's festivities as Featured Authors.The highlight of the luncheon was a lively panel discussion that featured Marc Morial, President and CEO of the Urban League, and Christine Sampson Clark of the National Education Association (NEA) Executive Committee. The discussion was moderated by Howard University professor Greg Carr.In addition, the Black Heritage Stamp was presented at the luncheon featuring the iconic New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint.If you were not able to attend the event and love black history, we ask that you support ASALH. On this day, February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City while preparing to address his followers. Born Malcolm Little in 1925, he emerged as one of the most influential voices in the fight for Black liberation. After spending time in prison, where he educated himself and converted to Islam, he became a leading figure in the Nation of Islam, advocating for Black self-determination and empowerment. In 1964, he broke away from the organization, adopting a more global view of human rights and Pan-Africanism after his pilgrimage to Mecca. His evolving philosophy sought to unite people of African descent worldwide in the struggle against oppression. Though his life was tragically cut short at just 39 years old, his words, teachings, and revolutionary spirit continue to inspire generations in the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality. ...
