Jesse Jackson is a prominent civil rights leader, minister, and activist who has dedicated his life to the fight for racial, economic, and social justice. A close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he emerged as a key figure in the civil rights movement, leading voter registration drives and advocating for economic empowerment in Black communities. In the late 1960s, he directed Operation Breadbasket, an initiative of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) aimed at increasing economic opportunities for Black workers. In 1971, he founded Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), focusing on economic self-sufficiency, education, and civil rights. Later, he established the National Rainbow Coalition, expanding his advocacy to unite marginalized groups across racial and economic lines. Jackson made history with his presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988, becoming the first African American to gain significant national support. His platform emphasized labor rights, healthcare, education, and anti-poverty policies. Beyond politics, he has played a vital role as an international mediator, negotiating the release of hostages and advocating for global human rights.
