On National Teachers' Day, we honor Hilda Grayson Finney (1913-1976), a trailblazing educator and advocate for Black history in South Carolina. Her dedication to incorporating Black history into the public school curriculum and her leadership in the Palmetto State Teachers Association paved the way for future generations to understand and embrace their heritage. Her unwavering commitment to the cause earned the recognition of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who appointed her as a field representative for the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1942. Today, we celebrate her lasting impact on education and the promotion of Black histor#ASALHA#africanamericanandlaborL#NationalTeachersDayr#blackhistorys#hildagraysonfinneyinney ... See MoreSee Less

ASALH: Association for the Study of African American Life and History
On this day, May 2, 1963, more than 1,000 Black schoolchildren in Birmingham, Alabama, bravely marched in a nonviolent protest against segregation in what became known as the Children’s Crusade. Organized by civil rights leaders as part of the Birmingham Campaign, the young demonstrators faced mass arrests and, in the days that followed, violent responses from police armed with fire hoses and attack dogs. Shocking images of children being jailed and brutalized drew national outrage and global attention, ultimately pressuring city officials to desegregate public spaces and improve job opportunities for Black residents. Their courage became a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement and a lasting symbol of youth-led resistance.Learn More: www.history.com/articles/childrens-crusade-birmingham-civil-rights#ASALH #ChildrensCrusade1963 ...
