Fannie Lou Hamer was a courageous civil rights leader and voting rights activist who became a powerful voice for racial equality in the 1960s. Born in Mississippi, Hamer dedicated her life to challenging systemic racism and empowering African Americans to exercise their right to vote. She co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in 1964 to challenge the all-white delegation at the Democratic National Convention, gaining national attention for her testimony about voter suppression and racial violence. Hamer’s activism extended to economic justice as she worked to combat poverty in the Black community through initiatives like the Freedom Farm Cooperative.
