We continue celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting Afro-Latino excellence with #BlackFacts. Today, we recognize Ruth de Souza, a trailblazing Afro-Brazilian actress who broke barriers in Brazilian cinema and theater. Her legacy continues to inspire across cultures.

Ruth de Souza was a pioneering Afro-Brazilian actress who broke barriers in Brazilian cinema, theater, and television, becoming one of the first Black actresses to gain national prominence. Born in 1921, she worked tirelessly to challenge racial stereotypes in the entertainment industry, portraying complex, dignified characters that defied the limited roles typically offered to Black actors. Her career, which spanned over 70 years, paved the way for future generations of Afro-Brazilian artists, and her legacy is celebrated as a crucial part of Black history in both Brazil and the broader Afro-Latino community.

In our next #UndergroundRailroadMonth Black Facts,

In our next #UndergroundRailroadMonth Black Facts, we highlight two brave freedom fighters: Laura Haviland and Jermaine Loguen.

Laura Smith Haviland was a pioneering abolitionist, educator, and key figure in the Underground Railroad. Born in 1808, she dedicated her life to the fight against slavery, actively assisting fugitive slaves in their escape to freedom. As one of the founders of the Raisin Institute, a school that educated both Black and white children, she also provided a safe haven for those seeking refuge from slavery. Haviland's unwavering commitment to justice and equality made her a relentless advocate, and her bravery earned her a reputation as one of the most effective conductors on the Underground Railroad.

Jermaine Wesley Loguen, an abolitionist and freedom fighter, played a significant role in the Underground Railroad. Born enslaved in Tennessee, Loguen escaped to freedom and eventually settled in Syracuse, New York, where he became a leader in the anti-slavery movement. Known as the "King of the Underground Railroad," he provided refuge and support to countless freedom seekers, helping them escape to Canada. Loguen also boldly challenged the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, advocating for the protection of those fleeing slavery and solidifying his place as a key figure in the fight for abolition.
