What does donating do?

This year, we’re raising money for Woodson Ambassadors. But why support ASALH today? ASALH’s 2024 #GivingTuesday campaign is dedicated to increasing Woodson Ambassadors for next year’s Annual Conference. We want to inspire, support and develop the next generation of Black historians, social scientists, scholars and educators. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to support 25 Woodson Ambassadors to attend the 2025 Annual Conference.

We are living in a time when states are in a frenzy to pass laws that prevent the teaching of our experience. Many have or are in the process of banning books about our history and culture. Only twelve states mandate the teaching of our history and culture in the public school system. We are being told that telling our history and lived experience brings such discomfort to school-age children that it should be illegal to do so. Therefore, we need to ensure that the next generation has the opportunity to participate in activities that accurately reflect our socio-historical experience. By contributing to ASALH’s #GivingTuesday campaign, you can help keep Dr. Woodson’s dream alive.

We hope to add at least 25 Woodson Ambassadors ($1,000 per ambassador) through this effort. All donations are welcomed and appreciated!

Why Give? See The Impact It Makes

“This was my very first time attending an ASALH conference! It was very exciting to see so many like-minded people in one place. The amount of knowledge gathered and shared was truly remarkable! I’m looking forward to attending again next year.”

“This was my first time attending an ASALH conference it was an enriching experience. As a Woodson Ambassador on the Academic Program Committee I benefited immensely from the exchanges I had with my peers and the opportunity to learn about their research.”

About Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a Movement that Unleashes the Power of Radical Generosity Around the World.

Giving Tuesday reimagines a world built upon shared humanity and generosity.

Their global network collaborates year-round to inspire generosity around the world, with a common mission to build a world where generosity is part of everyday life.

Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Giving Tuesday will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

ASALH’s 2022 “Giving Tuesday Campaign” is dedicated to increasing student participation in our branches. We want to inspire, support, and develop the next generation of Black historians, social scientists, scholars, and educators. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to pay the 2023 national membership dues for five student members for each ASALH branch. Hopefully, we will also raise enough money to pay their local dues as well.

We are living in a time when states are in a frenzy to pass laws that prevent the teaching of our experience in America. We are in a time where we are being told that telling our history and lived experience brings such discomfort to school age children that it should be illegal to do so. We need to ensure that interested students have opportunities to participate in activities that accurately reflect our history and lived experience.

Student membership dues are $55.00. We hope to add at least 275 student members through this effort. Each branch would be allowed to develop their own criteria for selecting and awarding the membership dues to five students.

Our theme for this campaign is to request generous giving to ASALH to support our diligent efforts to preserve our past and share knowledge to shape our future.
