Myers was a key figure in Black history and the labor movement during Reconstruction. In 1868, he founded the Colored Caulkers Trade Union Society, organizing Black workers to secure fair wages and workplace protections. A year later, he established the Colored National Labor Union (CNLU), serving as its first president and uniting Black workers to demand economic justice in a racially divided labor market. On January 10-11, 1957, sixty Black pastors and civil rights leaders from across the South, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., convened in Atlanta, Georgia, to strategize coordinated efforts against racial discrimination and segregation. This meeting marked a significant step in uniting advocates of justice and equality under the principles of nonviolence. Discussions focused on empowering African Americans to challenge systemic oppression through peaceful protests and grassroots organizing.
