ABOUT THIS BRANCH

The Philamontco Branch of ASALH was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Sunday, November 02, 2002 by the late Shirley T. Parham, Ed.D. and the late Naomi E. Berry, both ASALH life members. The Branch was chartered in the city of Philadelphia in the year 2004. Meetings were held at the Springfield Township Bldg., Wyndmoor, PA and at Arcadia University, Glenside, PA. In alignment with the ASALH mission, the Branch has conducted, sponsored, and participated in programs and activities that have been of immense benefit to the community. They include Educational Historical Tours, Art Exhibitions, Black History Films, Lectures and Black History classes for youth. The Branch has also arranged for the community to attend cultural activities including museums, concerts, plays and operas. The PhilaMontco Branch proudly implements and participates in programs which benefit children and adults such as hosting an array of speakers, sponsoring cultural activities, and presenting educational programs for youth. The Branch uses its collective voice to bring awareness to the myriad of injustices imposed on Africana intellectual and cultural narratives. While the branch uses these activities to reach all youth, the intent of the scholarship is to cultivate the next generation of African American scholars.
